SLOTH 11: Pride & Prejudice

The Sloth Presents Pride & Prejudice Live at The Parkside Lounge

July 25 2025

Doors at 6pm / Show at 7pm

Tickets $12

Doors open at 6:00 and stories begin around 7:00pm. Sharers and listeners are all welcome! No story is required to come and enjoy the scene. To sustain our work, there is a $12 entry fee, but we will turn no one away for a lack of funds.

On the fence about telling a story? We're here to help you develop it for primetime! Reach out to one of our gracious and beautiful hosts to brainstorm and refine. We'd love to get a glimpse of your inner worlds.

Hosted by Tiernan Bertrand-Essington & Rian Bodner

What’s the story theme?

What does it mean to embrace your queerness in a world that so often judges you for it? How have you navigated the tension between your pride and the prejudice you overcome? Whether it’s a story of defying expectations, challenging stereotypes, or reclaiming power, we want to hear how you’ve shaped your queer path. Come share your truth, laugh at the absurdities, and explore the compleity of love, identity, and belonging in a world that is always trying to label you.

What are SLOTH events?

The SLOTH is our queer gathering for friends to share stories inspired by our selected themes. Come to listen or come to tell. We welcome authentic and true(ish) tales, comedy, poetry, music, and any creative form you can put into a compelling 5-minute share. Follow us @sloth.nyc

Odd Salon NYC: STELLAR

Odd Salon NYC: STELLAR

Stories of astronomical discoveries and bad omens from the skies, Hollywood stars falling from grace, earth shattering objects falling from space, and how us little humans make sense of it all. Curated by Fellow J.R. Pepper:

 Alexander Razo- Meyers

Illuminating the Stars of Screen: Karl Freund, and the Evolution of Cinema Lighting

One person who spans the arc from the beginnings of cinema is Karl Freund, German cinematographer who ties early film history together demonstrating the essential nature of the art and craft of cinematography (and things so basic as moving the camera in a scene) from pre-sound film, to "Metropolis,” to the comparative modernity of "I Love Lucy.”

Rain Wiegartner

Jack Parsons is Ludicrous

In the 1930s and 40s, an eccentric rocket scientist founds one of the vitally important research institutions that brought humanity into space. At the same time, he was also trying to start the apocalypse using sex magic.

Sarah Grant

Galileo and his spoiled brat behavior that led to a feud with the Catholic Church.

Contrary to popular belief, Galileo was a spoiled brat academic who picked a fight with the Catholic Church when they were actually ok with the science (at least, in theory). Ironically, he originally thought he wanted to be a priest and sent his daughters to a convent. But spoiled brats are complex creatures who can't just leave well enough alone.

Amanda Harris

Shakespeare Supernova

When Shakespeare wrote of a new bright star to the west of the pole that appeared the same night as old King Hamlet’s ghost, many historians were baffled. Which bright star? Forensic Astronomers took the case to identify the star in question, and believe they found the answer!

Maryellen DeVivo

The Man Who Fell to Earth? Nikola Tesla's Relationship with Air and Space

A star inventor who lit up the world, Nikola Tesla was one of the smartest and most fascinating individuals to ever inhabit this planet. This talk will focus on all things Tesla-related that travel through the air, including wireless communication, lightning, spaceships, and pigeons.

We Know the Way: The Kon Tiki to Moana 2, Polynesian Celestial Navigation

No one knows where Polynesians first came from, but by 1000 BC they had covered over 6 million square miles of ocean. How did they do it?  They followed the stars.  You’re welcome.

With a catalog that dates back to 2021, the Denver-born artist and songwriter serves a sucker punch of pop prowess on a platter of biting lyrics. Nichols finds a through line in the disparate using her distinctive poetic candor and glitchy electronic soundscapes.

BACKROOM BACCHANAL by MELCHOR

Backroom Bacchanal

Welcome to DEBAUCHERY @ A SENSIBLE HOUR! The name says it all—expect the unexpected. We're turning up the heat early at Parkside Lounge for a night where things get wild… responsibly.

Doors open at 6pm, but the real journey begins at 7pm and rolls through 10pm. This isn’t your average party—it’s a slow-burning ascent into pure groove ecstasy. Expect world dance rhythms that build and build until resistance is futile. You will dance.

Guiding your night is Melchor Cardenas, your sonic shaman (not a DJ!) curating an unfiltered playlist 42 years in the making. Think of it as a musical odyssey through time, culture, and sweat.

No rules. No gimmicks. Just a carefully crafted vibe and unadulterated music.

Let loose. Get weird. But do it @ a sensible hour.

Wet Spot Presents: Michael Rider's Album Release Show

Wet Spot Presents Michael Rider's Album Release Show Live at The Parkside Lounge

June 28 2025

Doors at 6pm / Show at 6:30pm

Advance $12 / Door $15

Join us in celebrating the release of Michael Rider’s new album “Beauty” (out June 27th on Grimalkin Records.) with Special Guest Medusa.

Beauty, the fifth studio album by singer-songwriter Michael Rider (they/them), untangles the web of an abusive relationship during a time of great isolation under Covid-19. The artist writes about feelings of turbulent love, losing trust in oneself, and trying to be a good partner to the wrong person.

The album is a collaboration between co-producer M the Myth (they/them) and Rider. The title, Beauty, is partially inspired by their western astrological signs both being ruled by the goddess of love and beauty, Venus. It was produced entirely over Zoom, much like the time period evoked in the work, with Rider in New York City and M in Fresno, California. This project marks their second studio album to be released with Grimalkin Records, a collective of like-minded creatives championing the work of marginalized voices, including queer, disabled, BIPOC, and neurodiverse. Rider currently serves as a board member for the organization.

Rider moved to New York City from Richmond, VA in 2013 to attend the School of Visual Arts. Having been a student of both Richmond painter Mary Scurlock (Center for the Arts) and singer/songwriter, Charlotte Martin (Something Like A Music School) Rider’s training is a reflection of their unique visions. They broke their teeth playing open mics at The SideWalk Cafe (Regina Spektor, Moldy Peaches, and Kimya Dawson), playing shows along the east coast, and releasing four studio albums since 2011. Their latest album, Cycle, was Wavy Award nominated in 2022 for Best Album. michaelwrider.com

To make music like Medusa’s, you need three things: thick beats, visceral melodies, and an axe to grind. A storyteller at heart, the self-proclaimed “revenge-pop” musician aims to transform tales of queer joy, desperation, and agony into gratifying music “by any means necessary.” And they make good on the promise; their signature production style - described by Soundriv as “a breakthrough collection of LGBTQ hymns,” and by Bucketlist as “the most inventive [expletive] music we’ve heard in a long time” - feature unconventional samples like wolf howls and cheerleading chants as often as distorted basslines. By stacking intricate layers of sound design over aggressive beats, Medusa builds formidable symphonies that feel larger than life. The result is a unique blend of synth pop, hip-hop, EDM, and post-hardcore with a cinematic edge. medusa-adsume.com

Readings at Parkside: Tramps Like Us ~Joe Westmoreland

READINGS AT PARKSIDE:
TRAMPS LIKE US — CELEBRATING THE REISSUE OF THIS TREASURED CULT CLASSIC
WITH ALEX AUDER, JOHANNA FATEMAN & JOE WESTMORELAND

Sunday, June 22nd, 4pm

Abused by his father and stifled by closeted life as a teenager in Kansas City, Joe, the wide-eyed narrator of Tramps Like Us, graduates from high school in 1974 and hits the road hitchhiking. But it isn’t until he reunites with Ali, his hometown’s other queer outcast, that Joe finds a partner in crime. When the two of them finally wash up in New Orleans, they discover a hedonistic paradise of sex, drugs, and music, a world that only expands when they move to San Francisco in 1979.

Told with openhearted frankness, Joe Westmoreland’s Tramps Like Us is an exuberantly soulful adventure of self-discovery and belonging, set across a consequential American decade. In New Orleans and San Francisco, and on the roads in between, Joe and Ali find communities of misfits to call their own. The days and nights blur, a blend of LSD and heroin, new wave and disco, orgies and friends, and the thrilling spontaneity of youth—all of which is threatened the moment Joe, Ali, and seemingly everyone around them are diagnosed with HIV. But miraculously, the stories survive. As Eileen Myles writes, “I love this book most of all because it is so mortal.”

Back in print with MCD after two decades and with an introduction by Myles and an afterword by the author, Tramps Like Us is an ode to a nearly lost generation, an autofictional chronicle of America between gay liberation and the AIDS crisis, and an evergreen testament to the force of friendship.
